Natural Soundscapes: Eco-Musicological Inquiries on Bird Behaviors

Life Through Hip-Hop and Mindfulness

Dozing Off: Why Sleep Matters
At HSYLC, I attended three seminars covering topics from bird behavior and sleep to hip-hop and mindfulness. The hip-hop seminar left the strongest impression on me. One activity challenged us to write our own short rap verse and perform it for our classmates the next day. At first, I felt awkward and worried that I wouldn’t be able to keep up with the beat while rapping. But when it was my turn, I managed to get through the whole verse in one go, which surprised even me.

The seminar also introduced me to meditation as a way to explore mindfulness and well-being through music. I became curious enough to buy a singing bowl and started trying meditation with my friends. It was interesting to take something I had learned in class and explore it in my own time.

Capstone Project
How did hip-hop culture in the 1980s and 1990s influence the mainstream adoption of street fashion?
Our Capstone Board

As part of the Life Through Hip-Hop and Mindfulness seminar, my group explored how hip-hop culture in the 1980s and 1990s helped bring street fashion to the mainstream. Hip-hop is not just a type of music. It also includes dance styles, graffiti, and ways of dressing. We looked at how hip-hop culture changed over time and how artists, music, dance, and other forms of art shaped fashion. We studied popular styles like oversized clothes, tracksuits, sneakers, and bold accessories. We also looked at how these styles became part of hip-hop culture and later became popular with more people.

We also studied the links between hip-hop artists and major brands. One example was Run-D.M.C. and Adidas. Their partnership showed how hip-hop artists could influence fashion and help streetwear reach a wider audience.

For our final project, I helped with both the research and the visual design of our capstone board. I organized our findings into a visual timeline that showed key moments in hip-hop history and the fashion trends of each period.

House Fashion Show
At HSYLC, each House held a fashion show featuring outfits made from reused materials. Working with a friend, I helped create an outfit for our House Leader, transforming everyday materials into something creative and fashion-forward.

Inspired by Light✨
Our House, Lux, takes its name from the Latin word for light. So my friend and I, inspired by fireflies and bees, created playful, nature-inspired outfits using reused materials for our House Leaders' fashion show.
