Dulwich Olympiad, "The Odyssey" Theatre Production

The Dulwich Olympiad is an international event that brings together students from 10 Dulwich schools around the world every four years. Spanning Performing Arts, Art & Design, Music, and Sports, it provides a platform for students to share their talents, exchange ideas, and collaborate across schools and cultures.

Beyond showcasing individual skills, the Olympiad creates opportunities for students from different campuses to learn from one another and explore new ways of expressing their creativity.

Different Performance Styles

At the heart of the Performing Arts programme was a collaborative production of Homer's The Odyssey, reimagined through the creative perspectives of students from different Dulwich schools.

Each school was assigned a section of the story to interpret and bring to life through its own performance style. Drawing on diverse artistic influences, the sections explored different ways of expressing the epic's themes of heroism, adventure, and the search for identity. These interpretations came together to form a larger theatrical narrative, connecting individual performances into one shared production.

Rather than following a single theatrical style, the production celebrated the diversity of movement, performance, and cultural expression across the participating schools.

Our school's section explored the episode of the Cattle of Helios, in which Odysseus and his companions encounter the sacred cattle of the sun god during their journey home.

Inspired by Japanese Butoh and contemporary dance, our performance approached the myth through physical expression and movement. Rather than relying solely on dialogue, we explored how body language, choreographed sequences, and stage formations could contribute to the storytelling.

By combining these movement styles, we developed our own interpretation of the episode within the larger production of The Odyssey.
Our Section: Butoh-Inspired Performance

Rehearsing at Dulwich Suzhou
I contributed to the creative development of our school's section through both independent exploration and collaboration. I independently created some movement sequences while also exchanging ideas with my peers to develop and refine our choreography.
I took primary responsibility for designing formations within our section, considering how performers could move together and how their positions could shape the visual composition on stage.
The process allowed me to explore choreography beyond individual movements, thinking about how movement, spacing, and group dynamics could work together to support a performance. It also taught me to balance my own creative ideas with the input of others throughout the rehearsal process.

After rehearsing at our own campus, we travelled to Singapore to bring the different school sections together. What had initially been developed as separate interpretations of The Odyssey now had to connect as one continuous theatrical production.

During the joint rehearsals, I worked with fellow performers to refine transitions between sections and coordinate our movements with students from other schools. We also exchanged ideas and experiences, gaining a better understanding of the different artistic approaches each school brought to the production.

Seeing the individual sections come together, alongside large-scale scenes involving the full cast, gave me a new perspective on collaborative performance. It showed me how a production can bring together distinct creative voices while maintaining a shared artistic vision.
